Because I Like Cheese...
The people over at The Torontoist posted an article including their catalogue of cover songs yesterday. It's quite a good list to check out. Cheesy as cover songs can be, some of them in the catalogue are pretty good, if not better than the originals- i.e. Dave Werner's cover of "Straight Up" by Paula Abdul. This guy also does some pretty cool acoustic covers of "Like a Prayer" by Madonna and "Yeah" by Usher. Just going through the list, there were a few that I've heard before. Nina Gordon's cover of "Straight Outta Compton" is...interesting. Max Raabe's "Oops I Did it Again"? Just as interesting. And who knew that Fergie's "London Bridge" would sound ok as an emo song? Here are a couple of my fave covers stored on my iPod for good measure
- Shinehead- Billie Jean (Michael Jackson)- Very cool reggae version. I first heard it when my friend and I were eating at Kerby Lane about 5 years ago. It made us say, "Wait....what?"
- Dope- You Spin Me Round (Dead or Alive)
- No Doubt - Suspicious Minds (Elvis Presley)- Love it.
- Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - Uptown Girl (Billy Joel)
- Everclear - Brown Eyed Girl (Van Morrison)
- Ted Leo - Since You Been Gone (Kelly Clarkson)
- Dynamite Hack - Boyz in da hood (Eazy E)
- Social Distortion - Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash)
- Tiffany - I Think We're Alone Now (I don't remember who sang the original....)
- Rufus Wainright or Fiona Apple- Across the Universe (The Beatles)
- Travis - Baby One More Time (Britney Spears)
- The Suicide Machines- It's the End of the World as we Know it (REM)
And some other fun stuff- a college acapella version of Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me a River." College acapella groups can be pretty corny, but this performance is actually pretty good.
Heck yes, I'm weird.
